Used car purchase can save you a lot of money. A model of your choice that is fully loaded with latest equipment. But still buying used cars is sort of a gamble. Dealers will give every possible guarantee but the truth is that you will not know if the car is accidental, was it maintained or what the true mileage is. Some problems such as the old suspension might vibrate, the transmission might not work properly or the engine lacks power may appear when you test drive the car.
Should you buy the used car? To eliminate this risk you must be well aware of several points.
Used car buying is risky
You will have to carry out a thorough research, read reviews and consumer reports, ask people and compare cars by using fuel economy and other data. The cost of maintaining the car is also very important and should be calculated.
What’s the Objective?
Goal is to narrow your search by selecting couple of models otherwise you will not be able to make a good purchase. Actually what happens is, that if you make a wrong decision and purchase a car like BMW that has expensive parts then a small repair will cost you a lot of money. There is another good reason of narrowing the search down to couple of models. If you test drive the same cars you will be able to compare them very easily. Comparing several different models will only confuse you.
Checking Car History
Look at the cars history before you think about even getting near it. The cars that have been restored, accidental, have outstanding liens or ex rentals should be eliminated right after looking at the history.
Bring the Car to a Mechanic
A mechanic will certainly tell the hidden truth about the body, engine, and transmission, suspension, interior and exterior after a small inspection. You must not deposit any money to the seller before inspection is made.
Evaluating Paper work
Car’s papers must be in order and make sure that there are no liens registered against the car. Call the authorities and provide them with the registration of the car to find out if the car is stolen or not. If the used car is certified then the check all the papers carefully and ask if the warranty left will be transferred in your name.
Car price and value
The cheapest car might have more costly maintenance. Cheap cars on the lot may also have something wrong with them. You have to look for a reasonable priced car with good condition not a junk. The value and hence the pricing depends on the condition of the car.
Search the internet for a certain car like Toyota camery and you may find several hundred results ranging in for example $15,000 to $25,000. The $15,000 car is not a good deal and $25,000 is a little expensive but you will still be able to find cars in the range of $17,000-$19,000. With proper negotiation with the dealer you will also be able to get a discount from the dealer as illustrated below.
